Maypole

People in traditional costume dance around a maypole decorated with colourful ribbons in a town square. Buildings and a clear sky can be seen in the background, and decorated signs hang from the tall maypole.

A tradition since 1986

The maypole on the Marktplatz in Bad Weißenstadt is one of the town’s best-known landmarks. After a break of around 50 years, it was put up again for the first time on 1 May 1986 with the support of the town and many local craft businesses. Since then the Weißenstadt costume society has kept this tradition alive without interruption. To mark the 30th Maypole Festival, the pole’s guild emblems and signs were thoroughly restored. The tree is replaced every three years and always bears the Franconian colours of white and red.

The Maypole Festival The Maypole Festival is the first big festival of the year in Bad Weißenstadt and one of the most popular. The maypole is carried to the Marktplatz in a procession accompanied by music and raised there. The official ceremony includes a blessing by the clergy and several speeches. The traditional highlight is the ribbon dance performed by the “Almrausch” Weißenstadt costume association. The children’s group delights the audience with further performances, while a wide range of culinary treats invites guests from near and far to linger and enjoy themselves.
